Local Podcast Presents 3-part Series on The Spirit of Radio‏

This Is Toronto, an audio podcast dedicated to Toronto's arts and culture community, is proud to present a three-part series on CFNY - The Spirit of Radio.

During the 1980s, CFNY (now known as 102.1 The Edge) was one of the most popular stations in North America. It prided itself on playing music that could not be heard anywhere else. CFNY was one of the first commercial stations in Canada to play songs from the punk and New Wave movement. The station was also responsible for the creation of the CASBY awards.

This three-part series will take a look back on CFNY and the impact it made on Toronto's airwaves. It features an interview with two CFNY legends: Don Berns and David Marsden. Part one of the series will be released on Friday, July 31 and can be downloaded from This Is Toronto's website: www.thisistorontopodcast.blogspot.com.

I'm a disgruntled Blue Jays and Habs fan, and here's why...

- BJ Ryan gave us one decent year and then fell apart. Of course, you can't predict Tommy John surgery, but you can't ignore all the money that was wasted on him either. Ryan's going to earn 5 million for the rest of the season and 10 million next season. If he signs with a new team, he'll get to earn a new salary, in addition to what the Blue Jays owe him.

- Brian Tallet can no longer remain in the starting rotation. He's barley made it through five innings during his last few starts. His arm is just not accustomed to a starter's throwing schedule. He's better suited as a reliever.

- If Roy Halladay is traded, I might burst into tears.

- J.P Richardi has got to go. The majority of his decisions have had a negative affect on the Jays. There needs to be a change.

- Oh yeah....the Habs. They let Koivu go to the Ducks (Montreal is losing a real class act BTW). They let Kovalev go to the Senators (a team with just as much drama as the Habs). They get some new faces who could be good; but we won't know how good (or bad) they are until the season gets underway. I've got a bad feeling about the 2009-2010 season. I fear the word "rebuilding" will soon rear its ugly head.

Martin Streek: 1964-2009

Martin Streek passed away on Monday.

He was one of my favourite radio DJs of all time. He was the reason why my radio dial would land on 102.1 FM. There were many times I laid in bed listening to his memorable live-to-air shows. Part of the reason why I started volunteering at CKCU in 2002 was because of Martin Streek. He helped foster my love for radio.

RIP Martin. Thank you for everything.

Re. The Disabled List

Oh dear. Roy Halladay, Casey Janssen and Scott Downs have been placed on Toronto's disabled list. Brutal, absolutely brutal.

If you're keeping score at home, you'll no doubt discover that the Blue Jays' 2008 rotation is completely out of the picture right now. Doc, Dustin McGowan, Sean Marcum and Jesse Litsch are all spending time on the DL, while A.J. Burnett left for New York.

Unbelievable.

Of course, Halladay will return shortly. However, it's going to be very interesting. Looks like the rotation will be Scott Richmond, Brad Mills, Brian Tallet, Ricky Romero and Brett Cecil. Jason Frasor will probably fill in for Downs. Speaking of Downs...

For the record, my recent article about him has no connection with his injury. It's just an unfortunate coincidence. Trust me, there's no such thing as a GoodPoint curse.

- I should've known better. The western teams tend to be better than the eastern teams. The Lakers have much more experience than Orlando as well. That's all I've got to say.

Final Thoughts: NHL Playoffs

- Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins. I'm looking forward to see what the future will hold for this team. I was just a toddler when the Oilers won five cups in seven years. I wasn't alive when the Canadiens won five straight cups in the 50's and four straight cups in the 70's. Don't forget about the Islanders of the early 80's. I truly feel we're about to witness the creation of a legacy. Full credit to Pittsburgh. I didn't expect much from them this year. I was wrong.

- I was really glad to see Crosby back on the bench for the third period. Could you imagine watching your team win game seven of the Stanley Cup final in the medical room?

- Chris Osgood has to be the most underrated goalie of the last thirty years. He's quietly had so much success. If it was up to me, I would've given him the Conn Smyth trophy. From this point forward, I will mention him, Brodeur, Hasek and Roy in the same sentence.

- Definition of irony: The Penguins have won three cups on the road. The only time the Stanley Cup was presented in Pittsburgh was when Detroit won last year.

- When the puck struck the Pittsburgh crossbar, I knew nothing else would go in.

NBA Playoff Predictions - Championship Final

NBA Playoff Predictions - Round Three

In the second round, I correctly predicted all four match-ups. Of the four, one (Orlando/Boston) was a perfect prediction.

Eastern Conference

Orlando over Cleveland in seven

Western Conference

L.A. Lakers over Denver in six

NOTES: Yes, the Cavs have been phenomenal, but the Magic are dangerous. Cleveland will be coming off a layoff, which I feel will hurt their momentum. Nonetheless, it's going to be a great series....Not much I can say about the Lakers and Denver. From my point of view, L.A. is the more talented team and their experience from last year will certainly help.

Bonus!.....I shouldn't be surprised about Pittsburgh. The Penguins have been here before and know what needs to be done.

TV Confession

I've developed a taste for TMZ on TV.

It's not the material the show covers. I don't care about what [insert celebrity's name here] did on his/her trip to Paris. My favourite part of the program is when the TMZ reporters and editors are having their storyboard meetings. I guess I get a little nostalgic. It reminds me of all the storyboard/staff meetings I've been part of.

The Pros & Cons of Balsillie's NHL Dream

To be perfectly honest, I'm really torn on this issue. It would be great to have another NHL franchise in Southern Ontario, but there are many alarm bells going off in my head. The only way to come to a decision is to break down all the facts, opinions and points:

PRO - A second NHL team in Southern Ontario will provide fans with a new way to see hockey played at the highest level. Maple Leaf tickets are extremely hard to get a hold of; not to mention the fact that they are also incredibly expensive. A new team equals a new opportunity for fans to see the NHL's best.

PRO - A new team will create new jobs for Ontarians. There will be jobs in the club's front office. There will be a need for ushers and vendors. There will also be construction jobs created for the building of a new arena and/or renovating Copps Coliseum. We're in the midst of a recession. A new team will create opportunities for people looking for work.

PRO - A new team is good for the economy. Money will be made though admission and merchandise sales. There will also be plenty of advertising deals. Portions of the profits will be pumped back into the economy. Of course, this won't clear up all economic troubles, but it's certainly helpful.

PRO - The new team would not be an expansion team. Therefore, regular season and playoff success is likely to occur sooner. From all accounts, the Phoenix Coyotes appear to be an up-and-coming team.

CON - As pointed out by The Fan 590's Jack Armstrong, a second NHL team in Southern Ontario will negatively affect all other area-based teams; not just the Maple Leafs and the Sabers, but also the Raptors, the Blue Jays, TFC, the Argos, Ti-cats and Bills, the Marlies and Bulldogs, the Rock, Bandits and Nationals, and all nearby OHL and OHA clubs. As shown by the sports media, hockey comes first in Southern Ontario. A new NHL club will take away attention from all these teams. A new club could also take away fans and their money. For example, your average sports fan may decide to spend his/her hard earned money on "Coyotes" tickets, instead of Raptor tickets.

CON - Yes, there's a market for a second NHL team, but will there be enough support? I'm not an expert, but if Southern Ontario is a great hockey market, wouldn't every single professional team in the area do well in terms of attendance and support. As I've written before, the Hamilton Bulldogs averaged 4900 fans at their homes games (played at Copps Coliseum) during their 2006-07 AHL season; the same season when the Bulldogs won the Calder Cup. In fact, the game where they actually won the AHL championship had a paid attendance of 14,205, about 5000 seats short of a sellout. The Marlies have also had a poor attendance record, even though the team has performed better than their parent club the past two seasons. Let's not forget about the disastrous 2007 AHL All-star game held at Toronto's Ricoh Coliseum. Based on these results, I have to question anyone who says Southern Ontario would be a great hockey market.

CON - The Coyotes are a Western Conference team. Hamilton, which is where the team will likely end up, is more suited to be in the Eastern Conference. If the Coyotes are reassigned to the East, it will create uneven conferences. It seems minor, but it will affect how the games are scheduled. If they stay in the West, then the team will likely have to adjust to time-zone differences more often, which leads to a greater chance of fatigue. Remember, all Eastern Conference team are part of the same time-zone. The Western Conference teams do not have that luxury. Either way, it's a lose-lose situation.

CON - The Maple Leafs have deep roots in Southern Ontario. I simply cannot imagine a world where Leaf fans would be willing to buy season tickets for a different NHL team. In addition, I would be very surprised if MLSE allowed another team to relocate to Southern Ontario. Jim Balsillie would have to compensate MLSE for any loss of revenue caused by his team.

VERDICT: Based on the breakdown, I feel a second NHL club in Southern Ontario would be a bad idea. As I said, there is a market, but I wonder if there will be sufficient support. Based on the signatures Balsille has collected on his website, there appears to be some form of support. But I feel that's because the media has made this out to be an "American Commissioner vs. Canada" storyline. Gary Bettman is not anti-Canadian. He made sure the Oilers and Flames stay in their respected cities because he understands the importance of hockey to Canadians.

The issue here is Balsillie trying to bring an NHL team to Southern Ontario by using an approach that's not approved by the NHL owners. The NHL would have no problem having a team in Southern Ontario, as long as the relocation follows their procedures. What makes the situation such a mess is the various reports which claim that Balsille's actions have hurt his reputation with the other NHL owners. If his attempt to move the Coyotes fails, it's because of the owners and not Gary Bettman.

Regardless, it's likely that there will be a second NHL team in Southern Ontario in the future. However, if it turns into a finanical disaster and fails to draw support, I will not be surprised.

Orlando over Boston in seven

Western Conference

LA Lakers over Houston in four
Denver over Dallas in six

NOTES: Not much to say, but watch out for the Magic. Orlando is very dangerous.

Re. Life After People

The History Channel is running a ten-part series called Life After People. The program examines what the world will look like once all human life has been wiped out. The corresponding website has many features including some disturbing photo galleries. Here's a few examples:


The Houston Astrodome; about 20 years after the human race disappears. It's eroding and will succumb around the 100-year mark.


Chicago's Wrigley Field; about 25 years after the human race disappears. The shrubbery has completely taken over the stadium. Hopefully, the Cubs win the World Series at least once before the end of human existence. (Found this photo on Big League Stew)

NHL Playoff Predictions - Round Two

In the first round, I correctly predicted six out of the eight match-ups. Of the six, one (Chicago/Calgary) was a perfect prediction. Damn you, Pittsburgh. Damn you, Anaheim.

Onto the second round:

Eastern Conference

Boston over Carolina in five
Washington over Pittsburgh in seven

Western Conference

Detroit over Anaheim in six
Chicago over Vancouver in six

NOTES: I should've known better when I picked the Penguins to lose. Pittsburgh is a young team that is going to make a huge impact. I was simply influenced by their slow start this season. However, Washington is on a great roll and that will certainly continue. Regardless, Washington vs. Pittsburgh is going to be a very entertaining series. It will be a battle of the superstars: Crosby vs. Ovechkin...Anaheim may have beaten the Sharks, but there's (hopefully) no way they will defeat the vetran Red Wings. History will not repete itself. I am, however, enjoying the play of Bobby Ryan...Still loving the Blackhawks. Vancouver has a few injured players. It will be interesting to see if those players had enough time to rest and recover.

Re. Jian Ghomeshi & Billy Bob Thornton

The above parties did not have a great interview this morning on Q. In fact, it was quite the argument. From the listener's perspective, it was the dark side of live radio.

Basically, Jian was talking to Billy Bob about his band. When introducing the band, Jian of course mentioned Thornton's film career. Billy Bob took exception to this - "You weren't suppose to mention that shit." Apparently, the band's manager told Q's producer not to bring up the film career. Thornton also felt Ghomeshi was describing his music career/band as a hobby.

Verdict: Ghomeshi did nothing wrong. He was merely mentioning the acting career for context purposes. Billy Bob was a complete tool.

Anyway, if you get chance, you should hear the interview.

Re. Kurt Angle's New Film

I've always been a huge Kurt Angle fan. He's my second favourite wrestler behind (of course) The Rock. It's hard to believe that's it's almost been ten years since he made his professional debut.

Angle is starring a new film called End Game. Judging by the trailer, it looks bad; really, really bad.



Angle has won numerous medals and titles. But there will be no Oscar to add to his accomplishments. Maybe a Razzie if he's lucky.

Re. 1050 CHUM

RIP 1050 CHUM.

CTVglobemedia has decided to re-brand the famous Toronto radio station. It is now known as CP24 Radio 1050. The new station will basically broadcast CP24's audio feed on the AM frequency.

Of course, the previous attempt to re-brand 1050 CHUM failed miserably. Remember The TEAM 1050? However, even though it was an all-sports station, there was still a website that maintained CHUM's oldies format. Sadly, it appears that won't be happening this time.

It's the end of an era.

The Snack Guru

My friend Simon is a part-time actor. Here's a short feature where he portrays....The Snack Guru:



Simon's part of a contest being run by Doritos. The nacho manufacture is looking for a filmmaker who can come up with a name for a brand new flavour and make a commercial for it. If Simon's entry wins, he and the filmmaker, Samy Osman, win a lot of money and the commerical gets aired nationally.

I feel Simon deserves this victory. For crying out loud, he had to make out with nachos. If that doesn't show how dedicated he is to the acting craft, I don't know what will.

What The Deuce?

Not much to say. As I type this, Italy is leading Canada 4-2; very frustrating, but not surprising.

Re. The World Baseball Classic

Due to work commitments, I will not be attending any of the games. But, I will of course be following the tournament. I already caught a bit of the South Korea/Chinese Taipei match today.

Canada is in Pool C along with the U.S., Venezuela and Italy. Analytically speaking, it's unlikely that Canada will finish at the top of their pool. However, it's possible for Canada to finish second. Remember, the top two teams in each pool advance to the next round. I know for certain that the U.S. will be in first and Italy will be in fourth. So Canada will have to battle Venezuela for the second spot. It won't be easy - Venezuela has a very good roster. Of course, once the first pitch is thrown, all bets are off and anything can happen. Canada has a decent roster, but their pitching looks very suspect.

Meanwhile, just for fun, here are all the Blue Jays taking part in the WBC:

Toronto Nationals

I just found out that Toronto has a new field lacrosse team. They'll be called the Nationals and are part of Major League Lacrosse. Home games will be played at BMO Field, with the first match taking place on May 22 against the Chicago Machine.

From the looks of things, it appears the team is owned by MLSE, which means there's enough finances to promote and operate the team. But don't quote me on that, since I haven't found any confirmation.

It also appears that players from the National Lacrosse League (box/indoor lacrosse) play in this outdoor league as well. There's already a roster and one of the players is Colin Doyle, formally of the Toronto Rock.

Speaking of the Rock, there seems to be a relationship between them and the Nationals.

Re. The NHL Trade Deadline

There are a lot rumours and I'm not sure what will happen. It will be certainly intriguing.

Save Radio 3

Like many other Canadian media outlets, the CBC is not immune to the troubling economy/recession. The public broadcaster recently announced that it can no longer afford all of its programming and is looking to see what assets they can get rid of in order to stay financially afloat. One item that may get cut is Radio 3.

There are many products the CBC can do without, but Radio 3 IS NOT one of them.

Radio 3 provides an outlet for Canada's best musicians. It proves that Canadian music doesn't revolve around Nickelback, BNL, the Tragically Hip, Bryan Adams and Celine Dion. Without Radio 3, we would never hear Teegan and Sara, the Arcade Fire, Wintersleep, Buck 65, Broken Social Scene, etc. Best of all, Radio 3 is about music and not advertising revenue. You'll never have to deal with mechanical DJs or a uniformed style. You will hear creativity at its finest.

The only way Radio 3 can be saved is if we all make some noise. Justin Beach has set up an online petition, as well as an ongoing Facebook event. If you care about Canadian music, then please sign the petition and tell everyone about it.

Re. CUPE Ontario & Israel

Normally, I don't like commenting on political matters. However, CUPE Ontario's boycott of Israeli Universities is one issue that makes my blood boil. I don't know what kind of kool-aid Sid Ryan handed out at the Windsor conference, but it clearly and unfortunately did its job.

This boycott creates more divisions and encourages anger and hatred. No matter how hard CUPE Ontario tries to sugarcoat it, this boycott is antisemitic and hurts our country's reputation as an accepting and multicultural society.

For one thing, the Israel/Gaza conflict does not fall under CUPE's jurisdiction. Second of all, if CUPE wants to make a statement about this issue, they should encourage members from different backgrounds to have discussions about the conflict and come up with peaceful resolutions; perhaps this would set an example for others to follow.

Instead, however, CUPE has chosen to boycott, which is nothing more than a step backwards.

I know I have said this before, but it needs repeating:

Sid Ryan has publicly shown his ignorance. He has intentionally expressed antisemitism. He has also tarnished the image and reputation of CUPE. I encourage all CUPE members to speak with their leaders, CONDEMN this boycott and DEMAND Sid Ryan's resignation.

Given how the Habs have played lately, anything can help.

Re. the Marion/O'Neal trade

This trade was 90% related to the Raptors' future, and 10% related to the present.

During his short tenure with Toronto, Jermaine O'Neal played well. Unfortunately, the entire team didn't. If the Raptors want to make a serious run for the playoffs, they needed to make a sacrifice in order to make an improvement. JO put up great numbers, but he was expendable. This was proven by Andrea Bargnani, who showed that he could be just as productive as JO at the centre position.

More importantly, JO's salary ate up a lot of cap space. This trade frees up a large chunk of money for the Raptors, which will allow them to (hopefully) be buyers rather than sellers. The extra finance is also important for (again...hopefully) resigning Chris Bosh, who will have many enticing offers come his way in 2010.

Shawn Marion gives the Raptors a legitamate small forward. However, the length of his stay in Toronto remains to be seen. Marcus Banks is nothing special. He will probably get a few minutes and won't be back next year.

As for Jamario Moon - it's sad to see him go. But in all fairness, he was popular with the fans, but not that great on the court. With all due respect to Moon, he was simply a one-hit wonder.

A Few Thoughts On A-Rod

I wasn't surprised when I found out about Alex Rodriguez's steroid use. He's a great ball player, but I personally don't like him - mainly because of the bush league stunt he (allegedly) pulled on Howie Clark a few seasons ago. Let's also not forget about the young woman he was caught with in Toronto that wasn't his wife. For a guy with an already tarnished reputation, it only makes sense that he would eventually be caught using steroids, even though he took them 6-8 years ago.

However, I do give him credit for coming clean, admitting he used steroids and apologizing.

Regardless, this incident adds to the cynicism that surrounds Major League Baseball. As a passionate fan, this cynicism is upsetting and hurtful. However, it doesn't deter my love for the sport.

Okay, not exactly.

However, there is an actual city in Japan called Obama. There's also a rail line in the western part of Japan called the Obama Line.

CUPE Ontario Calls For a Ban on Israeli Academics

Sid Ryan, the President of CUPE Ontario, has announced that he will propose a ban on Israeli academics at a meeting next month.

As stated on the Globe and Mail's website, Ryan's proposal will ban Israeli academics from speaking, teaching or researching at Ontario universities, if they "do not explicitly condemn Israeli action in Gaza."

This stems from on an incident on Dec.29, when the Israeli Defense Force attacked a university in Gaza, which was allegedly affiliated with Hamas.

Adding fuel to the fire, Ryan stated, "Attacking an institution of learning is just beyond the pale. They (IDF) deliberately targeted an institution of learning. That's what the Nazis did."

This is absolutely disgusting.

First off, to put the IDF in the same category as the Nazis is harsh and insulting. It is grossly incorrect. Second, if CUPE believes in the rights and freedoms of people, why would they even consider restricting a certain group from having those same rights and freedoms? It makes no sense.

Sid Ryan has publicly shown his ignorance. He has intentionally expressed antisemitism. He has also tarnished the image and reputation of CUPE. I encourage all CUPE members to speak with their leaders and DEMAND Sid Ryan's resignation.

Playoffs, Here We Come!

Michael Barrett, Raul Chavez, Randy Ruiz & Mike Maroth.

Barrett will probably back up Rod Barajas.

Don't know much about Chavez. Probably won't make the roster.

Ruiz had the best batting average in the International League (AAA) last season. At 31, it looks like he's been a career minor leaguer. If he plays well, he could be a backup IF.

As for Maroth - we lost an 18-game winner, but gained a 21-game loser.
