Found another clip. This one is from 1979 and promotes a Blue Jays/Brewers match.
Another jazzy tune with footage from a match between the Jays and the Mariners at the old Kingdome.

Le Baseball
Questionable clip selection by Radio-Canada for this baseball promo. Although I do like the jazzy tune.
From 1977, promoting the first home opener at Olympic Stadium. Lots of footage from Jarry Park.

Re. Snooki and Linden MacIntyre
I have felt tempted to read Snooki's novel, A Shore Thing. Up until Saturday, I have successfully resisted this temptation.
But then, Linden MacIntyre - CBC Journalist (The Fifth Estate), Giller Prize winner - convinced me to pick up this book.
Just listen to these excerpts - as read by MacIntyre - and tell me if I'm wrong.

Re. George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight
I have to be honest. I'm not liking the new name
"George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight" = Generic and lame.
Seriously, what's so bad about "The Hour?"

AHL & CBC
The CBC announced it will broadcast ten American Hockey League matches during the upcoming 2010-11 season. All ten games will feature the four Canadian AHL clubs, as well as Binghamton (Ottawa) and Oklahoma City (Edmonton).
Perhaps my Hockey54.com article on the AHL inspired the deal (just kidding).
Regardless, this a smart move by the CBC.

Re. Nightstream
I miss Nightstream. It's still on CBC Radio 2, but it's changed.
I miss the Nightstream that had a DJ and played experimental and indie music. Now the experimental and indie stuff has been moved to the daytime and I'm left with a voiceless Nightstream, playing elevator/background music.
Now when it's late at night, I listen to Vinyl 95.3. It's alright. It plays some good cheesy pop songs; fits in with my guilty pleasures.
But it's no Nightstream.

Re. Andy Barrie
Andy Barrie is by far one of my favourite radio personalities. He's got this ability to do interviews in a non-attacking style, but still manages to ask important questions. I was sad when he announced yesterday that he's leaving Metro Morning. But I understand why he's leaving and I'm sure the other listeners understand too. He'll be missed, but not forgotten.
Here's the Toronto Star's article about his departure.

Random Thoughts
It's been a while since I posted something that wasn't promoting an article or podcast, or a video from YouTube. Things have been busy. I know that's not an excuse, but it is the truth.
Anyway, there's been a few things on my mind lately.
*I don't want the Blue Jays to trade Roy Halladay. But for the sake of the franchise, it has to be done.
*The Raptors have a decent shot at making the playoffs. If they play well, they can probably finish somewhere between 5th (a long shot) and 8th (reasonable). However, if they keep losing to teams like the Charlotte Bobcats by 35 points, it's going to be a very long and ugly season.
*For what they've got, the Habs have done well. The playoffs are possible, but not guaranteed.
*What has happened to the Detroit Red Wings?
*Am I the only person not interested in watching Glee?
*Obama is still the best person to lead the United States. Just be patient. It's funny how political allegiances will cloud rationality.
*Local Television vs. Cable Companies: I don't care. Both sides have problems.
*Too many judgements about the CBC are based soley on the television side. CBC Radio is the number one reason why the Corp. should exist in the first place.
*Niles Crane makes me want to buy Ikea furniture.
*Prose. Definition: This
That is all.

Re. Jian Ghomeshi & Billy Bob Thornton
The above parties did not have a great interview this morning on Q. In fact, it was quite the argument. From the listener's perspective, it was the dark side of live radio.
Basically, Jian was talking to Billy Bob about his band. When introducing the band, Jian of course mentioned Thornton's film career. Billy Bob took exception to this - "You weren't suppose to mention that shit." Apparently, the band's manager told Q's producer not to bring up the film career. Thornton also felt Ghomeshi was describing his music career/band as a hobby.
Verdict: Ghomeshi did nothing wrong. He was merely mentioning the acting career for context purposes. Billy Bob was a complete tool.
Anyway, if you get chance, you should hear the interview.

Save Radio 3
Like many other Canadian media outlets, the CBC is not immune to the troubling economy/recession. The public broadcaster recently announced that it can no longer afford all of its programming and is looking to see what assets they can get rid of in order to stay financially afloat. One item that may get cut is Radio 3.
There are many products the CBC can do without, but Radio 3 IS NOT one of them.
Radio 3 provides an outlet for Canada's best musicians. It proves that Canadian music doesn't revolve around Nickelback, BNL, the Tragically Hip, Bryan Adams and Celine Dion. Without Radio 3, we would never hear Teegan and Sara, the Arcade Fire, Wintersleep, Buck 65, Broken Social Scene, etc. Best of all, Radio 3 is about music and not advertising revenue. You'll never have to deal with mechanical DJs or a uniformed style. You will hear creativity at its finest.
The only way Radio 3 can be saved is if we all make some noise. Justin Beach has set up an online petition, as well as an ongoing Facebook event. If you care about Canadian music, then please sign the petition and tell everyone about it.

Late Night Radio: Nightstream
I was disappointed when CBC decided to cancel Radio 3's weekend broadcasts on Radio 2. The R3 program was the only time I would even listen to Radio 2. But now, I've returned to Radio 2 for a program that is eclectic, diverse and peaceful.
The program is called Nightstream and it airs seven days a week, from 1-6am.
Nightstream offers a wide variety of music. It touches almost every single genre featured on Radio 2. One minute you're listening to a folk song; the next minute you're listening to a catchy tune with electronic beats.
If there is one thing that all the tracks on Nightstream have in common, it's that they all express a calm presence. Each song will allow the listener to relax, reflect and wind down after a long day. Personally, I enjoy listening to the program as I lie in bed, drifting in and out of consciousness.
Of course, the only downside is that Nightstream airs in the very early morning, when you're probably asleep. However, if you are up during the program's five-hour time slot, I highly recommend you to listen. You'll find that Nightstream is a great way find peace in an otherwise hectic world.
For more information, visit Nightstream's website.

Changes To CBC Radio
Every decision will always have its pros and cons.
Yesterday, the CBC announced changes to their three English radio services. There were a number of changes. Two of which, I would like to write about.
1. The Cancellation of Freestyle
Freestyle will be taken off the air in mid March and will be replaced with a new arts-based program, hosted by Jian Gheomeshi. This is really no surprise. Freestyle was a good show; but, it wasn't a great show. I feel the program's downfall was that it tried so hard to sound "off the cuff." However, anyone who listened to the program, could tell the dialogue was heavily scripted.
There is a saying: "Great radio is something scripted, that's made to sound spontaneous." The quote represents a fine art that is very hard to master. Freestyle made a good effort. Unfortunately, it didn't work out. The conversations were grammatically correct and flowed too well, to be unscripted.
2. Radio 3 strictly on satellite
Radio 3 will no longer broadcast their weekend shows on Radio Two. The service will only be available on their Sirius channel and through a podcast. To me, that is a real shame. I don't own a satellite radio. I also only have basic-lite Sympatico service. So the Radio 3 website and the 30-60 minute podcast, will not be friendly with my bandwidth. Alright, I am being selfish; its just that I really enjoyed the content.
Here is what I feel the CBC is thinking with this decision: The majority of those who are 18-35 years old are consuming more of Radio 3's content, then of Radio One or Two. The 18-35 group is also into new forms of media. It's likely that they will be listening to satellite radio and downloading podcasts more then any other demographic. It just makes sense to put the content and the content providers together. It's a way to satisfy the group's demand in a form that is more favoured.
I guess I have to start looking into getting a satellite radio. Or, I could listen to more campus stations.
