Re. USA 5 Canada 3

That was quite the game. There are four things I want to say about it:

1. Ryan Miller......DAMN! Once again, we see why goaltending is sooooo crucial for this kind of tournament. Canada out shot the USA. The score could've been at least 7-5 for Canada. The Americans won because of Ryan Miller.

2. Canada, don't panic.

3. Stevie Y, if you're reading this, cut the cable and don't allow any newspapers into the hotel. Our boys don't need to see, watch or listen to all the craziness/panic/end of the world feeling that's about to take place.

4. Marty, it's a goalie stick, not a baseball bat. Next time, catch the puck and hold onto it. Had you done that, it would've been a different result. Babcock has two choices: he either plays Marty on Tuesday and then again for the quarterfinal match; or, he puts Luongo in on Tuesday and saves Marty for the quarterfinal match. If it was me, I'd go with the ladder. Marty still has it. But he's older and needs more rest than usual.

Re. The Opening Ceremonies

Most of what I saw was pretty good. But there are some things about the opening ceremonies that I didn't like.

The torch lighting ceremony was a disappointment. It had nothing to do with who lit the torch. It was more about how it was done. First off, what is the point of having an indoor cauldron? BC Place is being used for two events: the opening and closing ceremonies. Why have an indoor cauldron when it won't be seen again for two weeks? It's a waste of space, money, and given the malfunction, an embarrassment.

On top of that, Wayne Gretzky had to stand on the back of a truck, in the pouring rain and get a lift to the outdoor cauldron, while all the drunk clubgoers ran next to the vehicle. The whole thing was poorly executed. VANOC could have handled that a lot better. Throw in some pomp and circumstance! Have a red carpet! Put up some guardrails! Instead, the most important part of the opening ceremonies was sloppy.

The Olympic flag was brought out by Bobby Orr, Barbara Ann Scott, Jacques Villeneuve, Betty Fox, Anne Murray, Donald Sutherland, Julie Payette and Romeo Dallaire. Orr, yes! Scott, yes! Villeneuve, yes! Fox, absolutely! Sutherland, Murray, Payette and Dallaire, no!

Don't get me wrong. Sutherland, Murray, Payette and Dallaire are people to be proud of. They're heroes. They're legends. But they shouldn't have been carrying the flag. That responsibility should go to Canadian athletes who have had enormous success on the world's stage. That's what usually happens during the opening ceremonies for any Olympic event - former athletes from the host country bring in the flag.

Where was Donavan Bailey, Daniel Igali, Silken Laumann, Mario Lemeiux, Elvis Stojko, etc? Did VANOC snub them or did these people have prior commitments.

One other thing.

CTV posted the video of Georgen luger Nodar Kumaritashvili crashing into the metal pole; a collision that would end the young man's life. I watched the video and felt terrible afterwards. Why would CTV post the last moments of this man's life on their website? That is a classless move.

Re. Super Bowl XLIV

I have to admit: I got a little choked up watching the Saints win last night.

Nobody deserves this more than the Saints and the city of New Orleans. After everything that's happened in the last four years, it was beautiful to see Drew Brees lift that trophy over his head.

I'm a sucker for a good storyline. The city and the team gets knocked down by a horrible hurricane. They get up, rebuild and eventually find their way to the top. It's dramatic and inspiring. This victory will help the city in many ways.

Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints - Super Bowl Champions

PS: Pretty good halftime show. There's no better intro than the opening to The Who's Bubba O'Reilly.

I was sad when he announced yesterday that he's leaving Metro Morning. But I understand why he's leaving and I'm sure the other listeners understand too. He'll be missed, but not forgotten.

So about last week...

For the first time in four years, I went a full week without the use of a home PC or the internet. It wasn't an ideal situation. I couldn't write any articles (sorry Launy and Austin), couldn't apply to any jobs and I was forced to record an interview for an upcoming podcast using my old tape recorder. But despite all that, I have to say it was really nice not having to stare at a computer screen 2.5-3 hours every night.

I was productive. Made my lunch earlier, got my stuff together sooner and had more "unwind" time. I had more time to read, which I took advantage of. Finding time to read has been a constant struggle for me. I also wrote....literally; pen and paper.

I can't remember the last time I actually opened a notebook and wrote poetry and prose. I use to do it all the time. During my OAC year, you could always find me in the library writing (or sharing jokes with certain individuals who were pretending to study, but mostly writing).

I admit it: I'm dependent on the internet and my computer. It's a big part of my life and "profession." Personally, I feel there's nothing wrong with that. It's just the nature of the beast. I bought this nice laptop and everything is returning to normal.

It was really nice having a mini-vacation. However, I wouldn't want to go without a computer or internet all the time. That's why I called it a mini-vacation. I highly recommend it though. Take a week off from spending time in front of your home PC. Take a week off from surfing the net and making tweets and posts. You might find it to be a very nice experience. You might even feel cleansed.

I'm still alive. My computer kicked the bucket last week. It served me well. 7 years in fact; almost eight.

Now I've got a brand new laptop and everything should get back to normal shortly.

So....Did I miss anything?

Re. Peyton Manning

There's something about Peyton Manning that really bugs me.

He's one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL and has had a very successful career. He's a hall-of-famer, no doubt. However, he comes across as a bitter jerk.

I was watching the Colts/Ravens playoff game this past Saturday. Every time a teammate dropped a pass or failed to make a gain, Manning would have this disgusting expression on his face. And it wasn't done subtly. Peyton was very animated. He was literally sneering at his teammates.

The CBS broadcast showed the ending of the 2006 AFC final when Vanderjagt missed the field goal. You see the failed FG and then it cuts to Peyton who rolled his eyes and mouthed something along the lines of "I knew he'd miss."

Greg Gumble made note of it during the broadcast. The veteran commentator explained that Manning was a perfectionist. That's very understandable, but you'd think someone as experienced as Peyton Manning could keep his emotions in check.

I know, most star athletes are bitter jerks. Most star athletes have big egos. Most star athletes have a ''me-first'' attitude. I guess Peyton is no exception.

Forgive me if what I'm saying is old news. To be honest, I am a casual fan of football; both CFL and NFL. It was just something that was bugging me while I watched the game. One day, the bitterness Manning expresses to his teammates will haunt him. Maybe next week against the Jets. Or it won't happen at all.

Re. Raul Mondesi

Raul Mondesi's tenure with the Blue Jays was bleak, uneventful and dissapointing. His aquisition was one of the worst trades Gord Ash ever made. Okay, Shawn Green didn't exactly light the world on fire when he was sent to the Dodgers; but I bet Ash regrets the trade, as well as the David Wells for Mike Sirotka stinker.

That's how it was for the Blue Jays ten years ago. They had Carlos Delgado and Green, but couldn't afford both. This was before Rogers purchased the team.

Back to Mondesi. Since his retirement, Raul has found a new calling: politics.

This recent article from the Star explains everything. Turns out Mondesi and other former ball players are helping shape the Dominican Republic. But it's not as perfect as it might seem.

One Last Thing About Roy Halladay

I'm off for a few days. But I'd like to leave you with some parting words from Roy Halladay.

Doc took out a full page ad in the Toronto Sun to thank the Blue Jays, the city and the fans. Here's what the future hall-of-famer wrote (courtesy of TSN.ca):

My wife Brandy, sons Braden and Ryan, and I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Toronto Blue Jays organization, its incredible fans, and the City of Toronto.

I feel blessed to have been part of the Blue Jays since 1995 and am extremely grateful for the opportunities it has provided. Throughout this past 15 years, there have been so many people within the organization that have made a wonderful and significant impact in my life, it would be impossible to name them all.

I am sincerely grateful for the incredible support and compassion the Blue Jays fans have always shown me. I am in awe of your overwhelming passion and devotion.

Toronto will forever have a special place in my heart.

The memories will last a lifetime and so will my gratitude.

Re. Sunday

Have to be honest: I've never liked Sunday.

Don't know why I've never liked the day of rest. Maybe it was because it was the day before the start of another school week. It was a day when you scrambled to get all your school work done.

The Carleton campus was always a ghost town on Sunday. Sure, there were people doing research at the prison/library, but it always seemed to me that the usual campus life was deflated.

Sundays in downtown Toronto are still lively of course. People are shopping, the streets are just as packed as they are during the week and there's usually a sporting event occurring. However, there's still this feel to Sunday that doesn't exist on any other day of the week.

Perhaps Sunday is not a day of rest, but more of a day to reset yourself. It's a moment you take to reflect on the last seven days, while also preparing for the upcoming week. You might go out and shop or attend a party. However, you tend to be less intense and active. You tone it down. You're more relaxed.

I could be totally wrong about this. It's just a feeling I get every time Sunday rolls around.

Halladay Trade Vital for Everyone Involved

Well, it's official.

Roy Halladay has been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies.

I feel nauseous seeing "Doc" in a different uniform. But I'm happy for him as well. He finally has the chance to be part of a winning ball club. It's something he absolutely deserves.

This trade needed to happen. The Blue Jays are nowhere close to being a playoff- contending team. Having someone as good as Halladay on a rebuilding team is a waste of talent. Doc's stock is at its highest point and many teams were offering as many young prospects as they could afford. It would have been sheer idiocy if Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos ignored these viable offers.

Philadelphia gets a solid veteran who adds strength to their rotation, while the Jays get some strong prospects; building blocks for any rebuilding team.

In addition, Halladay needed a change of scenery.

Despite leaving Toronto on "good terms," there's no doubt that Doc has some bitter feelings after what transpired last season. Former Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi took advantage of Halladay and dangled him like an unwanted piece of meat as the MLB trade deadline neared. The constant rumours wrecked Halladay's mindset and caused him to fall into a mini-slump during the second half of the regular season. Ricciardi's actions were simply disrespectful and someone as special as Roy Halladay didn't deserve that type of treatment.

I hope the people of Philadelphia appreciate what they're getting. Halladay is a model athlete. He works hard, lives a healthy lifestyle and puts his team's needs ahead of his own. He's very charitable and understands the role of being a star player. More importantly, Halladay was a great mentor to many Blue Jay rookies and he will no doubt continue his tutoring with Philadelphia's young talent.

As for me, a long suffering Jays fan, I feel honoured to have watched the greatest pitcher in Blue Jays history on several occasions. It's too bad he didn't win a World Series title with Toronto. I really hope he can accomplish that with the Phillies.

Halladay has given so much to this sport. It's a crime he's never won the ultimate prize. Sure, there is the 2003 Cy Young award, as well as various other accolades, including an informal tip of the cap from George W. Bush, but a World Series championship is the only item Halladay wants.

Rather than forming an opinion based on second-hand accounts, here is exactly what Tiger Woods said:

I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.

Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means. For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives. The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious. Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don't share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one's own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions.

Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it's difficult.

I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.

The "media circus" surrounding this issue is simply disgusting. As a journalist, I am embarrassed. I think it's time to move on.

The Prosary is an online literary magazine magazine dedicated to publishing prose of a spiritual nature. This includes creative poetry, short stories, and other works of fiction inspired by one’s faith journey.

Although the name Prosary evokes images of a Catholic inclination, this litmag will publish works from any faith, whether you identify yourself as Protestant, Christian, Jewish, Moslem, Hindu, Buddhist, and anything outside or between. The important thing is that you remain respectful to the other faiths represented here and do not use your prose as a way of attacking or criticizing any faith or non-faith groups.

Random Thoughts

It's been a while since I posted something that wasn't promoting an article or podcast, or a video from YouTube. Things have been busy. I know that's not an excuse, but it is the truth.

Anyway, there's been a few things on my mind lately.

*I don't want the Blue Jays to trade Roy Halladay. But for the sake of the franchise, it has to be done.

*The Raptors have a decent shot at making the playoffs. If they play well, they can probably finish somewhere between 5th (a long shot) and 8th (reasonable). However, if they keep losing to teams like the Charlotte Bobcats by 35 points, it's going to be a very long and ugly season.

Final Thoughts: MLB Playoffs

Can't help but smile. I picked the right team and it was a perfect prediction! Of course, it doesn't mean I'm an expert. But it certainly feels good ;-)

New York's victory ties in nicely with the Joe Torre/Tom Verducci book, The Yankee Years, which I finished reading a few days ago. The Yankee Years gives a vivid description of how the Yankees have operated over the last 15 years. This allowed me to really understand this famous organization and appreciate the significance of their World Series success.

I'm happy for George Steinbrenner, who really doesn't control the franchise anymore and acts as a figure head. The Boss (and despite what we hear, is still a human being) isn't as healthy as he use to be. This champioship will make things easier for him.

I'm happy for Jeter, Pettitte and Matusi. But this doesn't mean I've developed a love for the New York Yankees. I still view them as the enemy. Some might argue this championship was bought and yes, that is somewhat true. However, the players still have to perform regardless of how much they make. New York could've easily been a team of rich underachivers.

Finally, congratulations to the former Blue Jays who were part of the champion Yankees:

- A.J. Burnett (I'm going to bite my tongue)
- Eric Hinske (still biting)
- Josh Towers (Technically, he didn't see any post-season action so I doubt he would be included. But I think he's on the 40-man roster)

To sum up: 5 out of 7 = 71% Not bad at all.

MLB Playoff Predictions - The 2009 World Series

During the LCS, I correctly predicted both match-ups. Of the two, one (NYY & LAA) was a perfect prediction. Onto to the final:

World Series

NY Yankees over Philadelphia in six

NOTES: For the record, I can't stand the Yankees. However, from an objective POV, I feel they're the better team. All the big hitters in New York's line up have been making the clutch hits. I also believe momentum is a big factor for any playoff format. Right now, the Yanks still have their momentum going, while Philadelphia's momentum has died off. The Phillies haven't played since last week and that will negativley affect them. Of course, the Phillies had a week off last year before defeating the Rays. But I doubt lightning will strike twice. By the way, has anyone noticed Eric Hinske is playing in his 3rd straight World Series?

NOTES: What a game that was last night! Wow, wow, wow. The Twins are on a huge momentum trip. Sadly, I feel it will come to a crushing halt in New York. The Yankees will take advantage of a tired Twins team...Colorado/Philadelphia was a tough call. I feel the Phillies have the slight edge. What happened in 2007 was cool, but it won't happen in 2009...The Dodgers had a pretty good season. However, they look weak. The Cards are on such a good roll. That will continue...I'd love to see the Angels beat the Red Sox. But Boston has the experience and the talent (again).

Re. The Blue Jays' 2009 Season

Thank God it's over.

I have watched the Blue Jays for many years. For the life of me, I can't recall a more painful season than 2009. The 1997 season comes close, but '09 was a complete nightmare/disaster/embarrassment.

What went wrong? Several things. They couldn't hit when it mattered. They taxed the bullpen. Injuries slightly played a role too. To be honest, I don't feel like making excuses or finding an explanation. Hell, I don't feel like writing about it anymore. Everything that needed to be said has been stated.

However, I will conclude with some "awards":

Team MVP - Aaron Hill

Hill had a horrible injury in 2008. It was a very serious concussion and it took him many weeks to regain his form. 2009 was retribution. Hill was fantastic! He's already been recognized for his effort by winning the American League Comeback Player of the year award. Honourable mention must be given to Adam Lind.

Best pitcher - Roy Halladay

Doc went 17-10 this season. However, the record should be at least 22-5. Half of those losses were because the offense simply couldn't score runs. The trade rumours didn't help either. Regardless, Doc is still the best pitcher on this staff.

Best rookie - Ricky Romero

Romero has good stuff. It'll be interesting to see what he can offer in his sophomore season. Honourable mentions to Marc Rzepczynski and Brett Cecil. At least the Jays are okay in the pitching department.

Best moment - Marco Scutaro stealing second right after earning a walk. The Phillies were wonderfully embarrassed that day.

Ugliest moment - Giving up a nine-run lead to Tampa Bay and ultimately losing the game.

Only 11,159 people attended last night's baseball game. That is the lowest attendance mark in Blue Jays/Skydome history. And Roy Halladay was pitching.

WTF?

There are several excuses/reasons/explanations I can think of:

- It's the Minnesota Twins. Not exactly a sexy opponent.
- School has started.
- The recession. People don't have as much spending money as they use to. Therefore, you have to budget what you have. That means luxary items (Blue Jay tickets) become unnecessary purchases.
- The team's pathetic performance. People are pissed. Quite frankly, I don't blame them.

Something is not right with Doc. Between June 29 and Aug. 19, Halladay was 3-5 with two no-decisions. Last night, despite eight strikeouts, he gave up seven earned runs and eight hits. That's not like him.

This Is Toronto, an audio podcast dedicated to Toronto's arts and culture community, is proud to present a three-part series on CFNY - The Spirit of Radio.

During the 1980s, CFNY (now known as 102.1 The Edge) was one of the most popular stations in North America. It prided itself on playing music that could not be heard anywhere else. CFNY was one of the first commercial stations in Canada to play songs from the punk and New Wave movement. The station was also responsible for the creation of the CASBY awards.

This three-part series will take a look back on CFNY and the impact it made on Toronto's airwaves. It features an interview with two CFNY legends: Don Berns and David Marsden. I'm a disgruntled Blue Jays and Habs fan, and here's why...

- BJ Ryan gave us one decent year and then fell apart. Of course, you can't predict Tommy John surgery, but you can't ignore all the money that was wasted on him either. Ryan's going to earn 5 million for the rest of the season and 10 million next season. If he signs with a new team, he'll get to earn a new salary, in addition to what the Blue Jays owe him.

- Brian Tallet can no longer remain in the starting rotation. He's barley made it through five innings during his last few starts. His arm is just not accustomed to a starter's throwing schedule. He's better suited as a reliever.

- If Roy Halladay is traded, I might burst into tears.

- J.P Richardi has got to go. The majority of his decisions have had a negative affect on the Jays. There needs to be a change.

- Oh yeah....the Habs. They let Koivu go to the Ducks (Montreal is losing a real class act BTW). They let Kovalev go to the Senators (a team with just as much drama as the Habs). They get some new faces who could be good; but we won't know how good (or bad) they are until the season gets underway. I've got a bad feeling about the 2009-2010 season. I fear the word "rebuilding" will soon rear its ugly head.

Martin Streek: 1964-2009

Martin Streek passed away on Monday.

He was one of my favourite radio DJs of all time. He was the reason why my radio dial would land on 102.1 FM. There were many times I laid in bed listening to his memorable live-to-air shows. Part of the reason why I started volunteering at CKCU in 2002 was because of Martin Streek. He helped foster my love for radio.

RIP Martin. Thank you for everything.
